19th October 2020: New single inbound from Matt Gold, ‘Once Upon A Time’ drops November 6th – press highlights for debut album ‘Imagined Sky’ includes DownBeat Magazine and All About Jazz

Chicago guitarist Matt Gold‘s new single, Once Upon A Time drops November 6th. It’s a chance for Matt to explore the influence of the great American jazz guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Here’s what Matt had to say:

I’m releasing a cover of “Once Upon a Time,” by the great Sonny Sharrock. We recorded it just a few weeks ago, and it was the first time my trio got together to play music since March – since we can’t be indoors together, we actually set up an outdoor recording session behind (drummer) Jeremy Cunningham’s house. It’s a song we’ve been playing for several years now, and I love the way this track turned out; I’m especially grateful we could capture the first moments of playing together after so many months apart. Sonny Sharrock’s music is overflowing with intensity, grace, and free-spiritedness, and I felt like it was the perfect piece of music to record, a clear window into the feeling of finally playing together again alongside the feeling of this moment more broadly, globally.”

The release comes off the back of Matt’s celebrated debut album Imagined Sky, a record that spans the breadth of influences from Americana and folk through to jazz and alt-rock. Matt featured in All About Jazz chatting about the album, which is available on our site on vinyl, CD and Digital Download.

“Gold’s voice sings with transfixing clarity on Imagined Sky. It’s as much as any artist could hope for with a debut.” – DownBeat Magazine (full review)
