Originally hailing from London, alto saxophonist and composer Will Vinson has made a career in New York City that has international implications. He has appeared with the likes of Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tigran Hamasyan, Gerald Clayton, Ari Hoenig, Marcus Gilmore, Orlando Le Fleming Chris Potter, Kurt Elling, Lage Lund and Aaron Parks. His most recent album, the self-titled bassless group Trio Grande sees Vinson continue his successful collaborations with Antonio Sanchez and Gilad Hekselman. Other appearances on Whirlwind include the succession of trio collaborations that made up four forty one, a release which represented Vinson’s wish to collaborate with some of the world’s finest contemporary jazz pianists.

In 2012, Vinson formed the critically acclaimed OWL Trio along with bassist Orlando le Fleming and guitarist Lage Lund, whose eponymous trio was hailed by critics alike. Other projects include Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s Quartet, Ari Hoenig’s Punk Bop and Nonet and Miguel Zenon’s Identities Orchestra.

Vinson’s saxophone playing is executed with power and dramatic sensitivity, characterized by imposing sound and technique. Influenced by saxophonists from Cannonball to Chris Potter, he nevertheless brings his own unique approach to every performance. Vinson’s writing, and the playing of his colleagues, combines a great respect for the century-long jazz tradition with explorations into the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic realms of contemporary forms.
