Profile

“Fearlessly interactive, a real musician’s singer.” – Pete Churchill

Nia Lynn is one of the UK’s preeminent vocalists and songwriters whose highly personal and emotional talent focuses on body and breath, text and voice, interpretation and improvisation.  She possesses a dynamic vocal range which enables her to sing everything from poignant, self-penned originals to counterpointing angular melodies alongside some of the most advanced instrumentalists on the scene.  Known as a ‘musician’s vocalist’, Lynn studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, earning a degree in in Jazz Voice (1999-2003) and has since enjoyed a fruitful career as an active member on the contemporary European music scene.  She’s also become a leading member of the voice community and a specialist within her field as a vocal coach and educator.

In the UK she performs regularly as a solo artist and sidewoman at venues such as Ronnie Scotts, The Royal Albert Hall, Pizza Express Dean Street, The Barbican (with the London Vocal Project featuring Bobby Mcferrin), The Vortex, The 606, and The Forge – where her most recent album Points Of View (Whirlwind), featuring Norma Winstone, was recorded live.  Since 2005 Nia’s ‘Bannau Trio’ featuring Gareth Lockrane (flutes) and Ross Stanley (piano) has been plowing it’s own path in the contemporary chamber jazz world.

Lynn’s own solo career draws heavily from the singer-songwriter tradition and ties in with Nia’s love of lyric craft and poetry (she’s a published poet). This project is called ‘Lynia’ and as of late can be heard performing at The Electro Acoustic Lounge, Proud Galleries, Barfly, 12 Bar Blues Club and The Bedford.

Nia is a keen and highly in-demand educator and facilitator and has worked in London, UK, Europe and internationally. She is also the Principle Study Jazz Singing Specialist at the Royal Academy of Music, and a specialist teacher at Trinity College, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  Moreover, she is Head of Voice at the Musical Theatre Academy, London (voted School of the Year 2011 by The Stage), where she heads the full-time program specializing in voice and breath work.  And more recently has been working as a Voice Coach for the Royal Shakespeare Company on their home and touring productions and is an in-house voice coach for the Olivier award-winning musical, ‘Matilda’.
