As one of the premier bassists of his generation in the UK, Max Luthert is known for his distinctive bass sound, approach to improvisation and is quickly generating a name for himself as a composer and band leader. In the last couple of years Max has been performing around the UK and Europe with artists such as Zara McFarlane, Partikel, Benet McLean, Duncan Eagles, Gareth Lockrane, Kit Downes, Mark Mondesir, Ollie Howell and Peter Edwards.
Max has featured on a number of albums as a co-leader and sideman and in 2010 he featured on the debut, eponymous release of co-led trio Partikel. Since their first release, Partikel have gone on to release another album, Cohesion in 2012 where Max garnered his reputation for “deeply resonant bass lines” (The JazzMann) and “creative support” (Mos Eisley Music) within the ensemble. With Partikel, Max has performed regularly around the UK at festivals and venues such as the London Jazz Festival, Pizza Express, the King’s Place and Brecon Jazz Festival.
In 2011 Max joined MOBO-nominated Zara McFarlane’s group. Since joining her band, Max has toured extensively around Europe performing at a number of prestigious concert halls, festivals and venues including the Barbican, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, the Bimhuis, Duc de Lombard and Fasching Jazz Club.
In 2013 Max recorded on Zara’s second album, If You Knew Her, which received critical acclaim and in 2014 Max appeared on the BBC’s Later…With Jools Holland.
Having established himself on the European music scene, Max released his debut record as a leader in 2014. The album, Orbital, has nine original compositions and features Gareth Lockrane (flutes), Duncan Eagles (tenor saxophone), Séb Pipe (alto saxophone), Matt Robinson (piano) and Dave Hamblett (drums). With enticing melodies, intricate harmony, subtly complex rhythms and forms, the band have created a cohesive sound that is enhanced by the instrumentation of the group.
