Florent Nisse

Profile

Born in 1983 in Colmar (France), Florent Nisse started studying double bass at the age of six. He began with classical studies, before discovering jazz at the age of fifteen. In 2002, he moved to Lyon in order to attend an engineering school. While studying science he never stops his musical studies, and finally got in 2007 three degrees, one in mechanics, one in classical music, and one in jazz music. Very active on Lyon’s jazz scene at that time, Florent chooses to give up science and to follow his musical career.

The year after he was accepted in Paris Conservatory (CNSM) in Jazz, in Riccardo Del Fra’s class. He graduated in 2011. During this period, Florent studied with Hervé Sellin, Pierre de Bethmann, François Théberge, Dré Pallemaerts, Glenn Ferris and Riccardo Del Fra. He also had the opportunity to work with major musicians of today’s scene, like Larry Grenadier, Fred Hersch, Drew Gress, Wynton Marsalis, or Billy Hart…

Professionally, Florent Nisse started his career in Lyon before moving in Paris in 2008. There he quickly became part of the rising generation of jazz musicians, and had the opportunity to perform both with rising artists (David Enhco, Flash Pig, Logan Richardson, Emile Parisien, Yaron Herman, Sylvain Rifflet, Thomas Enhco) and with more recognized ones (Michel Portal, Seamus Blake, Didier Lockwood, Joachim Kühn, Gilad Hekselman, Aaron Goldberg). Today, Florent is one of the most demanded bass player in Paris, and can be listened on more than twenty recordings.

In 2012, Florent Nisse also started his career as a leader and created his own band featuring Chris Cheek on tenor sax, Jakob Bro on guitar, Maxime Sanchez on piano and Gautier Garrigue on drums. With this quintet he recorded his first album Aux Mages, released in 2014, and very warmly received by the press.
