Coalescence • Album Trailer
Official worldwide release date - October 28, 2013
"One of the great challenges in composing instrumental music is finding ways to connect to a specific subject or concept, much like you would with a song containing lyrics."
- Andre Canniere
Coalescence (defined as "the union of diverse things into one body or form") is the latest solo album from trumpeter, composer & bandleader Andre Canniere, an American who's currently based in London. This album is Canniere's second release for Whirlwind and follows his critically acclaimed Forward Space, which received no less than a 5-star review from The Guardian as well as being called "one of the best debuts in a long time" by Jazzwise Magazine.
Coalescence builds from its predecessor from the first note, demonstrating Canniere's composing prowess as one of the premier writers of his generation; he sets aside any concern of genre limitations while fusing a wide musical palette into an inspired, unified statement. Canniere has also employed his regular band on the recording: pianist Ivo Neame, guitarist Hannes Riepler, bassist Ryan Trebilcock and drummer Jon Scott. The result of their touring over the past year is evident.
Canniere is as skilled on trumpet as he is as a composer. Listen in as he changes tones, timbres and attack at the blink of an eye, evoking different emotions and directions within the music, just as his compositions sometimes morph unexpectedly from section to section yet never losing focus. He's a craftsman at work who's developing an exciting and singular vision of music.
An Album of the Year - Marlbank
"A state-of-the-art acoustic post-bop release with a fine band the expat American trumpeter has assembled, Canniere’s tunes are strong, his sound dark in hue at times and with an edge to it where necessary. Convincing in every detail."
"Coalescence is the perfect title for this engrossing collection from Andre Canniere… the quality of the performances from Canniere and Neame in particular are of a high standard and it is also refreshing to hear an album with such rare ambition and desire to connect with real world issues.”
All About Jazz
"One of the brightest emerging talents on the UK jazz scene."
The Jazz Mann
"A New Yorker who has been living in the UK since 2008, Canniere's compositions contrast breezy folky jazz elements with a darker harmonic language that draws from Radiohead and a rawer rock-ish groove-based approach straight out of the New York alt jazz scene."
"Engaging and diverse collection of Canniere's own compositions... The depth of Canniere's creativity as a composer is demonstrated in the way he avails himself of different options, in terms of form, texture, orchestration, timbre, rhythm/meter. Canniere's playing is very satisfying to hear, both during improvised and pre-composed material. The CD has been expertly recorded and mixed."
International Trumpet Guild Journal
"The American-born trumpeter has emerged as one of the most compelling artists on the current London jazz scene, and this follow-up to his acclaimed Forward Spaces more than justifies that claim. His rich and flexible tonal range and highly inventive improvisations are supported by a powerful quintet."
★★★★ The Scotsman
"A splendid album from American trumpeter Andre Canniere."
"Audaciously crafted works from an imaginative newcomer."
"This is an album of peerless musicianship and terrific production, doubtless with serious intent."
The York Press
"A masterly new release from trumpeter and composer Andre Canniere... This new quintet somehow has the ability to continually shed new light on their offering, the various nuances frequently revealing themselves differently each time – an indicator of their superb collaborative musicality. An excellent programme, and definitely a repeat
"One of the most exciting young trumpeters emerging on the scene... some superb moments of musical fire... highly recommended."Jazz Camera“Bright, spearing one minute, meditative and self-communing the next, Canniere constantly draws the ear throughout this consistently absorbing and well-balanced set of fresh, bright originals.”
"In recent months Whirlwind Recordings has released a number of releases that may well feature in the Album of the
Year scenario… This is just such a disc."
Bebop Spoken Here
"Another very strong addition to the impressive catalogue of Michael Janisch's label, which has quickly become a significant presence."
★★★★ The Scotsman
"Canniere premiered the album last October and his confident command of the stage and dark-hued stadium jazz improvs wowed the audience on the biggest stage at Kings Place at the Whirlwind Festival."
