Reviews, Airplay and Interview for Mike Gibbs Recent Release ‘Mike Gibbs +12 Play Gil Evans’ + 4 Stars from Jazzwise & The Evening Standard

Mike Gibbs Album Low Res “A beautifully recorded album”

Esteemed veteran musician, composer and arranger Mike Gibbs recently launched his album Mike Gibbs + 12 Play Gil Evans on Whirlwind Recordings, and today we have in a plethora of glowing reviews and mentions for the new release.

Jazzwise have given the album 4 stars, stating that “there are many fulfilling moments, not only from soloists but of course from Gibb’s scoring and re-scoring” with the London Evening Standard also rating the album 4 stars, announcing that “those densely chorded passages on Bilbao Song, St Louis Blues and Spring is Here are what moves us”. Mike Gibbs Jazzwise

On top of these two reviews, Northern Echo has noted the release as “a beautifully recorded album”, with The Jazz Mann describing it as “Immaculately arranged, played and recorded, this is an album that combines intelligence and loveliness in equal measure and is highly recommended.”

The release has also received radio airplay from Jazz FM on the Sarah Ward show, on the 103.2FM Night-Train show, Radio Cardiff and on BBC 3 Jazz Line Up.

Mike Gibbs is arguably one of the most important living composers and arrangers working in the jazz and improvised music idiom.  He has worked with legendary artists including Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Joni Mitchell, Whitney Houston, John Schofield and Peter Gabriel in a career that spans four decades.  The 76 year old Gibbs, according to The Guardian “still sparks subtly hamonized thrills from a jazz orchestra in ways that few can,” and it’s with great excitement Whirlwind Recordings has been able to capture his 12-piece ensemble performing arrangements of Gil Evans material, adapted to mark the celebration of Evan’s 100th anniversary.

Mike Gibbs +12 Play Gil Evans features an array of leading London based musicians, with
Hans Koller (piano), Julian Siegel (tenor & soprano saxophones, bass clarinet),
Finn Peters (alto saxophone, flutes), Lluis Mather  (tenor saxophone, clarinets), Percy Pursglove (trumpet), Robbie Robson (trumpet), Joe Aukland (trumpet), Jim Rattigan (French horn), Mark Nightingale (trombone), Sarah Williams (bass trombone, tuba), Michael Janisch (double bass) & Jeff Williams (Drums).

Also in, (featured below) we have an interview with Mike Gibbs on the new release conducted by London Jazz News.

BIG NEWS: Andre Canniere releases ‘Coalescence’ his second album for WWR, release date OCT 28 + UK Tour and Album Launch event at Whirlwind Festival

Coalescence Album Cover

Whirlwind Recordings is proud to officially announce:

Coalescence

from trumpeter and composer Andre Canniere

featuring:
Ivo Neame – Piano, Accordian
Hannes Riepler – Guitar
Ryan Trebilcock – Double Bass
Jon Scott – Drums

Release Date: October 28, 2013: Worldwide Physical & Digital

“One of the great challenges in composing instrumental music is finding ways to connect to a specific subject or concept, much like you would with a song containing lyrics.”
-Andre Canniere

andreCoalescence (defined as “the union of diverse things into one body or form”) is the latest solo album from the highly gifted trumpeter, composer & bandleader Andre Canniere, an American who’s currently based in London. This album is Canniere’s second release for WWR and follows his critically acclaimed Forward Space, which received no less than a 5-star review from The Guardian in 2012 as well as being called “one of the best recordings in a long time” by Jazzwise Magazine.

Coalescence builds greatly from its predecessor and gleams with originality from the first note, further demonstrating Canniere’s composing prowess as one of the premier writers of his generation, and one who completely bashes aside any concern with genre limitations while fusing an enormous musical palette into a unified and inspired statement. Canniere has also employed his regular band on the recording (pianist Ivo Neame, guitarist Hannes Reipler, bassist Ryan Trebilcock and drummer Jon Scott) and the result of their touring over the past year is clearly evident, as they have developed into one of the premier ensembles working at the forefront of improvised instrumental music in the UK.

What’s more is that Canniere is as skilled on trumpet as he is as a composer. Listen in as he expertly changes tones, timbres and attack on his chosen instrument at the blink of an eye, evoking different emotions and directions within the music, just as his compositions sometimes change unexpectedly from section to section, while never losing focus; he’s truly a craftsmen at work who’s developing an exciting and singular vision of music.

And look out for Andre’s UK tour in support of the release with a CD Launch party at our inaugural Whirlwind Festival at Kings Place on OCT 12. Click here for tickets.

Review in for John O’Gallagher’s ‘The Anton Webern Project’ from Jazz Weekly

WebernJust in is another review for one of our recent releases – John O’Gallagher’s The Anton Webern Project. This new review is from Jazz Weekly, who describe John’s band as ‘flexible and adept’ at performing his reworkings and adaptions of the music of Anton Webern – an Austrian composer known for his innovations in twelve-tone technique and the musical movement known as ‘Serialism’.

Webern studied and was a significant follower of composer Arnold Schoenberg, who himself was associated with the ‘expressionist’ movement, with the influences of these composers living on in this latest WWR release which has already been hailed in the press as one of the most original albums of 2013.
