The Whirlwind Sessions in full flow: Update + live review & artwork of launch night from Alban Low’s ‘Art of Jazz’

Pizza Express Flyer 2013 no crops

The Whirlwind Sessions kicked off with a bang on March 8 and we’ve had another great night since lead by WWR Jeff Williams.  So far both nights have been full with people and energy until 3 am. The buzz is about Londontown about the place to be on a friday night late.

We’ve just been alerted to this great online review from Alban Low’s blog site ‘Art of Jazz‘ Alban is a fantastic London-based drawer, illustrator and all around visual artist who has done work for WWR in the past including all the original artwork for Partikel’s Cohesion record.  MJ PHOTO

Alban came down to the first show on the 8th of March and sketched the musicians he saw performing including WWR’s own Michael Janisch (see right) and a number of other musicians on the night. He also wrote about the night in a not-so-typical-live-music-review manner but at the same time in a highly creative way which we thought was pretty cool.

The Whirlwind Sessions are in full flow now, so come down to Pizza Express every friday and enjoy the hang.  And it’s free entrance plus the entire catalog of WWR albums are on sale at 1/2 the normal price (exclusive to the WWR sessions).   See you there! For more information, visit the Whirlwind Sessions page on our site.

Partikel with great live reviews in Downbeat Magazine and Jazz Journal

cohesion

Partikel released ‘Cohesion’ with us in 2012 and the album did wonders to raise the profile of the London-based sax trio around the world, securing their reputation as one of the best new creative bands coming out of the UK (see below). The album has continued to draw attention across mainland Europe even becoming a hit in the jazz charts of Italy as of late.  Always touring and honing their craft, the band recently performed to a sell out crowd at the Vortex in London supporting the Jakob Bro Trio, and reviewers from both Downbeat and Jazz Journal both gave the band a great mention.   Check out the band’s Promo Video below, and for ordering, click here.

From London Jazz News, Another Highly Complimentary Review For Recent Release ‘The Glimpse’

RM Cover

Last month has seen the release of two new additions to our WWR catalog, the first being Robert Mitchell’s The Glimpse, an album that concentrates wholly on solo left hand piano playing and with a different approach to composition through this deliberate restraint of the right hand. This week we have received a great review for the album from London Jazz News, stating that “Mitchell’s album is something of a revelation” and includes “absorbing improvisations, compositions… and a number of cogent Mitchell originals that intriguingly vindicate his stated aim.”

Robert is currently touring The Glimpse around the UK, so you can catch all the dates via our events page. He is also hosting a left-hand festival this month at The Forge, Camden entitled ‘Leftitude’ (20th and 21st March).
