Here’s the official blurb from the Pizza Express:

Arguably the most celebrated, in-demand, and talked about tenor saxophonist of his generation in contemporary jazz music, Walter Smith III makes his exciting debut at PizzaExpress as a leader. Known around the world by musicians and fans alike for his breathtaking and engaging improvisations, direct and instantly recognizable sound, and ground breaking albums (which blend tradition and modernity like few artists in this age), Smith has been the first call tenorist of choice for the likes of superstars Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride and Jason Moran, and has recently been seen touring the UK with Blue Note recording artist and new trend setter, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. He is joined by Christian Scott’s bandmates Mathew Stevens (guitar) and Jamire Williams (drums), as well as leading bassist Michael Janisch, a regular favourite at the club. These two nights are the band’s only London shows of a 15-date UK-wide tour. Not to be missed!
“…the development of his ideas can only be described as a journey that never ceases to lose momentum…” – Jazz Times.

Three WWR Albums make the London Jazz best of 2012 Critics list

Happy Holidays! We’ve tuned in from our holiday celebrations just to mention some exciting news that has just hit with regards to some end of year ‘best of 2012’ lists.

We’re delighted to report that three of our 2012 releases have made the best of 2012 critics list from our friends over at London Jazz.

The three albums that made the list are: ‘Banned in London‘ by The Aruan Ortiz & Michael Janisch Quintet (released in late Oct), ‘Paper Universe‘ by George Crowley (his debut album released in May), & the debut album of Tom Gibbs’ Fear of Flying‘ (released in Oct). Congrats to all!

LIVE IN LONDON: The new album featuring Lee Konitz, Michael Janisch, Dan Tepfer, and Jeff Williams, set for May 20th 2013 release!

After a very exciting fall 2012, we’re plowing forward into 2013 (now that we’ve had assurance that the Mayans were wrong :-)) and wanted to let the world know about something very special coming in the spring of next year.  ‘LIVE IN LONDON’ will be released worldwide on May 20th, 2013 and features the iconic saxophonist Lee Konitz, WWR’s own Michael Janisch on double bass, uber-creative pianist Dan Tepfer, and WWR Artist Jeff Williams on drums.   Over six hours of music was recorded live in London from this leader-less quartet’s first performance together as a unit, back in May of 2010 at the Pizza Express Jazz Club.  The music is spontaneity at it’s very best; these musicians had absolutely no idea what they were going to perform until someone took the lead and starting making sound– their only priority was exploration in the moment as a collective whole. What followed was two nights of exhilarating, ‘seat of the pants’ music which received huge accolades from the press who came down, as well as four sold out houses who were on their feet at the end of the performance wanting more. Luckily for us it was recorded and now we are able to honor that request, as we’ve handpicked the highlights from across the four performances, and in May of next year will share that with the world.   Also of note, Mr. Konitz excitedly performed on Soprano Sax on a few of the numbers, which is pretty rare to hear on record, so that’s an added bonus.

Stay tuned for more news to come on this unique collaboration, and Happy Holidays from all of us here at WWR.

Exciting news comes to us today as WWR’s founder and international renowned bassist and composer Michael Janisch receives a prestigious and highly sought-after grant from the PRS for Music Foundation in support of his upcoming UK tour with one of the preeminent saxophonists of his generation, Walter Smith III, (who also appears on Michael’s debut album Purpose Built, the first album we released here at WWR).  This will also be the first headlining tour by Walter in the UK (he’s usually seen touring with Blue Note artist Ambrose Akinmusire), and we’ve just heard word that the tour was previewed in the Guardians’ end of the year wrap-up here.

PRS for Music Foundation is the UK’s leading funder of new music across all genres, and their mission is to stimulate and support the creation and performance of new music to ensure it is enjoyed by as wide an audience as possible.

Releasing a debut album is a huge milestone in a a creative artists’ career, and so we love when we get the privilege of helping a musician bring their first artist statement to the world.  On the 25 of Feb 2013, we’re releasing the debut album of a very special 25 year old musician, drummer and composer, and are ultra excited about the  powerful vision of music he’s  recorded with five of his closest musical colleagues.   The album boasts an enormous range of emotions, textures, and stellar performances by all on board, and will do doubt put Dave Hamblett strongly on the map as a new artist with a very personal and honest take on contemporary improvised music.

Dave Hamblett is fast becoming one of the most talked about musicians on the UK creative music scene, combining his formidable skills as a first call drummer with his growing reputation as a composer of powerful and original contemporary improvised music.  Hamblett’s performances display a deep understanding of a multitude of genres and he shows a maturity in both his drumming and composing rarely heard from a musician aged twenty-five.

Hamblett studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 2010 with first class honors and a host of awards including the coveted Yamaha Jazz Scholarship.  His distinctive yet adaptable playing has led him to work with many of the UK’s finest musicians including Abram Wilson, Ivo Neame, the F-IRE collective large ensemble, Yuriy Galkin Nonet and Nick Smart’s Jazz Matanzas.  Hamblett is also featured on the recent Ivo Neame Octet album Yatra.

As a leader and composer Hamblett has been forging his voice and musical direction by performing with his own sextet The Dave Hamblett Group, his main compositional outlet.  The ensemble features the leading lights of their generation – Ivo Neame, Calum Gourlay, Josh Arcoleo, Joe Wright and Alex Munk and they have been performing steadily on the London scene for the past three years, developing a unique voice and a tight cohesive group sound.

Hamblett’s debut album ‘Light At Night’ presents music that is powerful, joyful and direct, while also sophisticated and intricate.  It weaves simple melodies over unexpected shifts through harmonies and grooves and creates vibrant landscapes for improvisations that transform as the pieces develop.

Light At Night will also be launched live at The Forge, Camden on Friday 8 February 2013 followed by a nationwide tour:
8th FEB – Launch Night at The Forge
17th FEB – St Lawrence Chapel, Ashburton, Devon
18th FEB – The Beaver Inn, Appledore, Devon
19th FEB – Cori Tap, Bristol
20th FEB – Dempseys, Cardiff
