Partikel with review’s in All About Jazz, The List, and Jazzwise

One of the UK’s premier young bands, Partikel, and their first WWR recording ‘Cohesion‘ have been getting great review’s in the press.  Here’s one from All About Jazz that just dropped, and look out for a review in Jazzwise in the feb. edition as well as Kenny Mathiewson of the The List states, “the trio’s flexible, responsive interplay – well-honed in regular gigging – maintains both energy and interest”

A sneak quote from the JazzWise review:  “Partikel is a young contemporary jazz three piece with a taste for African, Caribbean-rooted and contemporary grooves, folksy melodies, and exhilarating changes of gear…there’s not a dull moment.”

The trio is out and about the country, check out the Events page for more information.

Jeff Williams, 4 Star review in February issue of Downbeat Magazine

Another great showing in the press for Jeff Williams’ ‘Another Time‘!  The article below will be appearing soon in the FEB 2012 edition of Downbeat Magazine.  Here is a sneak peak at the review, which gets 4 stars.

Jeff Williams
Another Time
Whirlwind Recordings 4616
It all begins with a drum solo. For more than a minute, “Search Me,” the first track off Another Time, bursts out of the speakers with crisp snare rolls, thundering toms and, finally, stunted cymbal sibilance. The improvisation, neither flashy nor indulgent, is Jeff Williams’ only brief moment in the spotlight. Williams sits in the background, but he doesn’t become time-keeping wallpaper. His drumming interacts with trumpeter Duane Eubanks and alto saxophonist John O’Gallagher, but he never demands to be heard. In the quartet—John Hebert, on bass, lays down a harmonic foundation in the absence of a piano—Williams has focused on creating an energy for his bandmates through vibrant, organic patterns. On Another Time, Williams celebrates the contributions of his musical allies by including three tunes written by each of the sidemen (the drummer penned the remaining pieces). Eubanks’ “Purple, Blue And Red” starts as a mournful ballad and takes on a new shape with a double- time section before slowing back down for the solos. Hebert’s “Fez” is a sprightly piece, and Williams sits out initially before swooping in with brushes on O’Gallagher’s “Go Where You’re Watching,” a tender tune with a spindly melody. —Jon Ross

Jeff Williams gets CD of the Year 2011 from UK Jazz Radio

Saxophonist on the rise George Crowley to Debut on WWR with ‘Paper Universe’, audio samples and info now on the site.

Right now on the London creative music scene, one name pops up in many circles, and that name is George Crowley.  He’s only in his mid twenties but plays with the maturity and character of someone twice his age, with an infectious tone and a very welcomed wit and elegance when improvising.  He launches his debut recording right here with WWR, titled ‘Paper Universe’, and he’s appearing alongside his long time working quartet made up of some of the UK’s most talked about young musicians.  With Kit Downes on piano, Calum Gourlay on bass, and James Maddren on drums, the quartet have been developing since their time together studying at London’s famed Royal Academy of Music, and Crowley and Downes go back as musical associates back into their teenage years.  So the music reflects this personal relationship, almost scarily so in that on the first listen one would never guess that the album is made up of twenty somethings.  This is not only a debut, but a very strong, mature statement by an artist who will no doubt solidify a place at the table of the premier creative artists of his generation today.

‘Paper Universe’ has been added to the site, and you can visit its page to listen to sound samples and learn more by clicking here.
